say that i was foolish/say that i was blind/never say that i got left behind
Oysterband - We Could Leave Right Now
a rather straightforward folk rock song, i suppose, but there's something compelling about it. the insistent, almost grim hum of the strings, perhaps. we can forget our names/forget each other's faces/don't be afraid/don't be afraid

Oysterband - Bells of Rhymney
a cover of a folk rock song which originated from a ballad about the hardship of miners. ...it's a good song, okay. :\\\ the little guitar melody is strangely catchy.

Oysterband - Granite Years
and if you didn't download this the last time around, here's your chance. this is the song which got me interested in the band -- youth and not-sepia nostalgia.

Taking, thanks! I like the combination of vaguely ominous/sinister lyrics and hummable tunes that are typical of folk ballads.

The lyrics of Bells of Rhymney remind me of Oranges and lemons (say the bells of St. Clements...
(incidentally, have you heard Sixteen Tons, an American folk song about coal miners? similar theme, very different execution.)

you're welcome! glad you liked.

yes, i believe the resemblance was intentional. i've never heard oranges and lemons being sung, though.
(and nope, haven't heard that before. i imagine it'd be rather more violent/emotional in tone.)

St Clement Danes apparently rings out the tune regularly, according to wiki. this mp3 (by the Queldryk Choir) of the rhyme was the only one I could find with limited google-fu.

(Right on both counts, though this is a rather cheerful, almost insouciant rendition by Tom Jones XD)

thanks for both songs! it turns out that i -have- heard oranges and lemons before, though i've no idea where or when that might have been. and the Tom Jones rendition of the other song is nothing like what i'd expected, eheh, but i suppose the blues/jazz feel is appropriate.
