attempt at a meme: Name a fandom, and I'll state at least three of my unpopular opinions related to that fandom. though possibly i am not a great judge of opinion popularity. feel free to name fandoms i'm not actively in, i guess.

i have so many pictures of punting and lying on the grass and strawberry-picking and other obnoxiously summery things but i am incredibly lazy so i shall probably not post them. instead, have this:

i cashed the cheque today and felt a little sad that i couldn't keep it.

new music this month - may [Jun. 1st, 2009|11:07 pm]
[Tags|]

haven't been listening to much at all.

PRDCTV - Kyla's Dendrogram [demo]
PRDCTV - Hello Bruno [demo]

PRDCTV is an electronica act which i discovered through seeing them (it's usually a one-man outfit, but he's joined by a guitarist when on stage) playing live early in May. the first track is kind of glittery and has enough jagged corners to be interesting despite the repetition. the second is probably more typically electronica, and is somewhat cheerily catchy. neither track is particularly challenging; i suppose you could say that they function well as background music, which is an assertion one can make about many electronica tunes, i imagine.

The Better Than It Sounds Meme

1. Write up misleading summaries for 10 properties.
2. Post them to your blog.
3. Have people guess.
4. Cross out those that are correctly guessed.

all anime and manga, naturally. line(s) of fic for anyone who guesses correctly -- though i think i've probably made them too obvious.

1. Ex-professional spends years dodging law. Monster, guessed by [info]lesstraveled, [info]feliciter
2. Teenagers break laws, cause great damage.
3. Everything goes as bully wishes.
4. Girl forced into servitude under false pretences. Ouran High School Host Club, guessed by [info]feliciter
5. Society blind to threat it must live with. Mushishi, guessed by [info]lesstraveled, [info]feliciter
6. Unpaid assistant caught up in foreign intrigue.
7. Young men face bleak career advancement prospects. Weiss, guessed by [info]lesstraveled (and [info]feliciter)
8. Child soldiers undergo rigorous training. Naruto, guessed by [info]acanti, [info]lesstraveled, [info]feliciter
9. Genius struggles against societal norms, eventually fails. Death Note, [info]feliciter
10. Teenager repeatedly lies to friends, family.

For the second Asian Women Blog Carnival, and its (optional) theme of Inter/intra/transnationality.

This was going to be a much longer post with a bit about social divides in Singapore, but offline life struck. Still, perhaps that discussion would have worked better in a separate post, anyway.

i confess: this is all an excuse for me to practice drawing in pen without preliminary pencil work. ._. also posting fanart is incredibly embarrassing when my flist is full of amazing artists.

simplest task first: i am offering to draw any anime/manga character(s) of your choice in strange clothes. i reserve the right to determine what i mean by 'strange clothes', but feel free to offer suggestions.

an old-fashioned manual poll [May. 19th, 2009|06:59 pm]

Y/N answers suffice. Except for the last question. Silence will be met with lj silence, probably.

1. My photos from the Italy and Morocco-(Gibraltar)-Spain trips are already on Facebook. Should I repost a selection of them here?
2. Should I post pictures from uni life here?
3. If I offered to draw [anime character of your choice] in strange clothes, would you take me up on the offer?
4. If I wrote a long post about (not) being (a very good example of) a Chinese Singaporean, would you read it?
5. How do you pronounce clementine and aubergine?

new music this month - april [Apr. 30th, 2009|04:08 pm]
[Tags|]

i spent most of april travelling, and didn't have a portable music player or anything. but oh, such a backlog of CDs and songs to get through.

The Wrens - Happy
I like how this builds and builds, the repetitive melody becoming something new, acquiring urgency. The music is bright, almost insistently hopeful, not quite as bitter as the lyrics.

The Wrens - Faster Gun
I... don't know how to describe this song, but it is certainly interesting. Energetic and hard-hitting and maybe a bit insane.

The Wrens - This Boy Is Exhausted (live version? demo? i have no clue)
The Wrens - This Boy Is Exhausted (album version)

the former is raw and desperate and full of energy; the latter is more polished, a little wearier.

fun fact: i acquired the former back in 2004, and have only just realised it wasn't the album version.

I thought a lot before deciding to make this post. I don't use this lj for serious posts; I dislike talking about myself before an audience; and I don't know how much my perspective can offer.

new music this month - march [Mar. 24th, 2009|04:19 pm]
[Tags|]

Explosions in the Sky - The Only Moment We Were Alone
Starts off slow and tentative, builds into aching hopefulness, and then-- but that would be a spoiler. fal;jfa;f look, I can't write seriously about music, okay, but this is a beautiful song. Also, excellent use of drumming, especially in the brief marching-band-style bit. I need to own some of this band's albums once I can get them cheaper than prevailing amazon.co.uk prices.

Sigur Rós - Hljómalind
Sigur Rós does U2 Previously known as Rokklagið, the Rock Song, it's indeed fairly straightfoward rock by Sigur Rós's standards: accessible without being banal, rousing and optimistic without being shiny-happy (not that there's anything wrong with shiny-happy, mind).

Jason Becker - Altitudes
The same friend who lent me that album by The Gathering has also lent me a Jason Becker one. Lots of fancy guitar work, maybe kind of gimmicky and masturbatory pretentious in bits, but worth a listen if you like very fast guitars. (As an aside, Jason Becker's story is depressing.)

will be offline from wednesday until 4th April or thereabouts -- off to italy with [info]erushi!

-_-;; [Mar. 23rd, 2009|04:29 pm]
[Tags|, ]

so i know that i kind of defaulted on the earlier call-for-fic-prompts post (i... might get around to writing those during my travels? maybe?), but i am bored, so: give me six relatively non-cruel* words, and i may write a sestina. fandom optional.

*or massively cruel, whatever, it might be more interesting that way.
