Oysterband - We Could Leave Right Now
a rather straightforward folk rock song, i suppose, but there's something compelling about it. the insistent, almost grim hum of the strings, perhaps. we can forget our names/forget each other's faces/don't be afraid/don't be afraid

Oysterband - Bells of Rhymney
a cover of a folk rock song which originated from a ballad about the hardship of miners. ...it's a good song, okay. :\\\ the little guitar melody is strangely catchy.

Oysterband - Granite Years
and if you didn't download this the last time around, here's your chance. this is the song which got me interested in the band -- youth and not-sepia nostalgia.

[meme] things i do not blog about, 3/3 [Apr. 3rd, 2008|08:58 pm]

[initial post]

this post's title notwithstanding, feel free to suggest more topics. i'm not likely to post any proper unprompted content in the near future, after all.

from [info]feliciter: what would make me stop listening to Kent )

and on that note, here's my favourite song from their latest album:

Kent - Våga vara rädd
upbeat, catchy, and just generally fun. <3 it even has happy trumpets!

[initial post]

it is indeed the case that i rarely blog about Issues, political or social or otherwise, and while there are some issues on which i have definite opinions, i'm far from being the sort of person who has an opinion on everything. this was therefore an interesting exercise. is it worse to be ignorant of the facts yet have an opinion, or know the facts yet be apathetic? i think i tend more to the former.

from [info]wao: what I think about what parents of child prodigies should do... )

...and what I think of the calls to boycott the Olympics. )

back! terribly belated congrats and good luck to the one-year-younger people (i feel so horrendously obsolete now), wherever you may be going or choosing to go. :D

and because my posts have been even more content-free than usual this year, a meme which may counter the trend, at least for a while:

Everyone has things they blog about. Everyone has things they don't blog about. Challenge me out of my comfort zone by telling me something I don't blog about, but you'd like to hear about, and I'll write a post or comment about it. Ask for anything: latest movie watched, last book read, political leanings, thoughts on yaoi, favorite type of underwear, graphic techniques, etc.

i promise replies of reasonable length, a relative lack of evasiveness, and proper capitalisation.

i haven't been very good at being... well, at being, lately. probably won't post again until april (and won't be commenting from friday onwards), so: have a lovely spring, for those of you who do have spring, and all the best to the now-j3s who are waiting on results of various kinds, and all the best to everyone, really, whatever you are doing now and wherever you are or are going.

on that cheerful (?) note, a meme from [info]wao, because i like this sort of thing.

Comment and I'll give you a letter (if you want); then you have to list 10 things you love that begin with that letter. Afterwards, post this in your journal (if you want) and give out some letters of your own.

i received the letter j. )

The rules are easy, just post 10 things that recently made you happy! Then tag 10 people and force them who may then, if they so please, choose to post this meme on their LJs. Because it is good. Everyone needs a little happiness once in a while.

(i am taking 'recently' to mean 'in the past week or so', because without constraints i could go on and on.)

1. sunlight. sunlight sunlight sunlight. good weather makes me ridiculously happy, and when walking down the street on particularly fine days i tend to be grinning inanely to myself. it's especially lovely because it's oxford: the green of the quads, the way the warm light brings out the blond stone of the buildings, the radcliffe camera against a bright blue sky.

2. conversation over food and/or drink. it doesn't happen that often, because i am fairly non-social when eating in hall, but when it does -- over drinks in a pub, or waffles in someone else's college, or lunch in my own -- then it is most enjoyable.

3. food. i shall spare you the details.

4. having fellow anime/manga fans with whom one may interact offline. and the anime-watching sessions themselves. hurrah for audience reactions and viewer comments!

5. small unexpected kindnesses.

6. receiving awesome things in the mail from very kind people.

7. really good lectures in which you not only feel that you've learnt something, but also enjoy the time spent doing so.

8. feeling CNY-festive despite the general lack of CNY decorations/music in shopping malls/acknowledgement of CNY's existence. although my college is holding a small drinks party for the Chinese students tomorrow evening, and serving Chinese food in hall, which is nice of them.

9. spring coming in: snowdrops and crocuses (i think?) and daffodils and the first pale-green buds on the trees.

10. how bright the stars are on a clear night.

i received a really awesome Bartimaeus trilogy* fic for [info]yuletide! it's first-person-POV and pitch-perfect -- Bartimaeus's narration was the main reason I liked the books, i won't lie -- and works so well and oh, Bartimaeus-Ptolemy interaction, be still my heart. :D :D :D

[info]feliciter also wrote me awesome epistolary Mushishi fic. *_*

*the Bartimaeus trilogy is a YA fantasy series; possibly the first i have read since secondary school, picked it up after prompting from a friend. it isn't high literature by any measure, but it does have one of the best/most entertaining narrators (who is also an unreliable one, yay) since Kyon. also, alternate history 'verse with magic in!
